Whether it’s your first pregnancy or fifth, pregnancy is one of the most exciting times in a woman’s life. Moms want everything to go as smooth as possible, ensuring that they eat properly, stay active, attend doctor appointments and take necessary vitamins for optimal development. When aligning your birthing team, along with your midwife and/or obstetrician, massage therapist, and clinical nutritionist, it is important to have a chiropractor who is certified in pregnancy care. Research has shown that besides decreasing pregnancy associated low back pain, chiropractic throughout pregnancy can help optimal fetal positioning, shorten labor, help resolve headaches, improve birth outcomes and quality of life. I recently had a patient, whom under care, shortened her labor by 29 hours!
The chiropractic pregnancy technique is also known as the “Webster” Technique. The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces interference to the nervous system and balances maternal pelvic muscles and ligaments. This in turn, reduces torsion in the uterus (a cause of intra uterine constraint of the baby) and allows for optimal fetal positioning in preparation for birth. What does this all mean? Simply, when joints are not moving properly, they can affect ligaments, which in turn, may place stress on the uterus and therefore baby positioning. Chiropractic helps to establish balance before birth and has multiple benefits for both mom and baby.
