If you’re looking for a chance to meet other families, socialize and let the kids burn off some extra energy, Trinity Lutheran Church at 935 West Bigelow Ave. in Findlay is hosts opportunities for inside fun this summer.
Open Gym for Special Needs Play Time is a group for families of children with special needs and meets every Tuesday from 1-2:30pm through August 7th. The Open Gym is a Trinity Lutheran ministry designed to address the need for physical activity during the summer for the local special needs community.
An ongoing program
Christy Bauer, one of the group organizers, explains that this is the second year for the program. Held in the church gym, the group has a supply of sporting equipment available and children may also bring their favorite toys to play with. Many of the activities are sports related and are designed for all ages.
Bauer said the group usually has children middle school age and younger attending. Families also bring food to enjoy during the Special Needs Play Time as a potluck lunch.
Friendship and support
Bauer, a special needs parent, notes the group promotes the development of friendships and support. “The little ones make friends that they enjoy seeing week after week, while the adults bond over the shared experiences of caring for special needs and young children. The young ones get a chance to develop physically and learn social values like patience through play.”
Additionally, the church is hosts an open gym for preschoolers this summer on Wednesdays from 9-10:30am. Both programs are free and open to the public.
