Jump into summer fun and fellowship at Potluck & Play and Sensory Friendly Movie Night events for children with developmental differences and their family and friends at Blanchard Valley School. Participants should bring a dish and their favorite beverage to share in the cafeteria, and after eating, the kids can play outside on the playground. Sensory Friendly Movie Night will begin in the cafeteria after each of the play dates.
“These events are really good because a lot of the kids with special needs don’t get to go to special events,” Treece said. “They might have behavior problems that other parents don’t understand. Here they can be around other kids like them and build social skills, and parents can meet other parents who know what they’re going through.”
“It’s so nice to meet other parents who get it,” she added. “It’s good all around socially for everybody.” Treece said that last year, most of the attending kids were between the ages of 2 and 13, but the events are open up to age 22. Following Potluck & Play, all are welcome to stay for Sensory Friendly Movie Night, another free event that will begin in the cafeteria around 6:15pm. Treece said that during the movie, kids are not expected to sit still. It is a judgment free zone, where they are welcome to talk, sing, or run around and play. Blankets and pillows are encouraged, and popcorn and water will be provided. Additional snacks will also be available for purchase.
The play dates, put together by Friends of BVS, will take place from 4:30-6pm on July 17 and August 7.
