Are you up for a challenge?
If you can eat a 2.5-lb burger and a pound of French fries in an hour, you can earn a spot on the Burger Hall of Fame at the Dark Horse Restaurant. Along with a free meal, you get an “I defeated the Monster Burger t-shirt” and gastronomic bragging rights.
Holy cow – pun intended. Not even my tall husband was ready to take on the Monster Burger Challenge. Still, we had fun discussing the challenge as we chowed down at the Dark Horse, 4136 N. Main St.
The ultimate meal
From the outside, the Dark Horse doesn’t look like much, but don’t let looks fool you. In fact, this unpretentious little bar and restaurant served up some of the better food we’ve had in recent months.
Whatever you are in the mood for, you can likely find here: pasta, sandwiches, burgers, steaks, salads and ribs are featured lunch and dinner offerings. Breakfast is also served, beginning at 7am, five days a week.
A flavorful crunch
As an appetizer we ordered deep-fried southwest spring rolls. Were they healthy? Probably not even close. But they were really good – not too spicy, but still flavorful and crunchy. I figured I would be the only one to eat them – well, me and the eight-year-old mini-me who eats everything I do. Alas, we had to share. My 11-year-old, a bit more finicky, really liked this Tex-Mex take on egg rolls. “Find a recipe for that,” said the husband.
The two youngest in our party ordered off the children’s menu: fettucine and chicken fingers with fries, both $3.95, including a dessert. My husband ordered the BBQ bacon cheddar chicken sandwich ($7.99) with a 1/3 rack of ribs to share ($4.99). I ordered garlic pasta with grilled chicken on the side ($7.99) – I love restaurants where I can order a regular entrée and get the meat on the side, since I’m a vegetarian. The salad that came with my meal came with bacon bits – my fault for not asking beforehand, but a boo-boo that was quickly corrected by our waitress.
The ribs were devoured by my three carnivores, and my husband remarked he should have gotten a larger portion since they were so popular. The kids’ items were just right – you don’t want to mess too much with chicken fingers and pasta for kids, after all. I really enjoyed my pasta, and was able to indulge in my love of garlic. I thought about asking them to add more, but I figured my family wouldn’t appreciate it on the ride home.
And what about that burger challenge? According Neeli Oler, manager, 176 people have tried, and only 13 have succeeded. The fastest monster meal consumed took only 26 minutes. I don’t know that we will be trying to get our pictures up there any time soon. But we will return to the Dark Horse – that’s a challenge that will be easy to meet.
