Imagine traveling singers, costumes, sets, a portable piano — well it's real. The Toledo Opera's program Opera on Wheels visits elementary schools throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan performing 45-minute children's operas. Recently, thanks to a generous grant from the Marathon Petroleum Corporation over 5,000 Hancock County students, in kindergarten through eighth grades, enjoyed the live art form. During March and April the Opera on Wheels will perform The Ring based on Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, a cycle of four operas which has been condensed and adapted for youth. Preferred venues for the performances are gymnasiums where students and staff can gather. Study guides will be provided to enhance the opera.
